History
All was good in the world of Pern after the computer-mind, AIVAS, managed to help the humans and dragons shift the Red Star far enough away that their ancient menace, Thread, would no longer fall and destroy anything it touched. Technology was allowed to advance at a rapid rate, humanity expanding as it is wont to do, shifting away from the cave-system of the Holds into something more village based. However, the weyrs remained, testament to a time when there was safety in the earth itself. The number of dragons dwindled as the Queens produced fewer and fewer eggs, and they were forced to take up different jobs as couriers and transporters, while their wher-cousins actually became more useful and plentiful, taking on many similar roles.
However, a mere half century later, in this nearly idyllic Pern, dragon numbers began to suddenly increase, the few Queens rising with a strange frequency seen only in the Pre-AIVAS eras of Threadfall, though they could not say what caused their Rising... Few actively feared Thread's return, though all continued to keep a weather eye on the sky, until one night, they spotted a rather strange light, a light that grew steadily brighter every night for three weeks, awing many. However, this was no star, but a large comet, and on a bright, shining afternoon, it crashed into the surface of Pern with destructive force, immediately wiping out all life several hundred miles from its epicenter, and beginning a chain of reactions that would cause the death of seventy five percent of all Pern life.
Tsunamis raged the seas while tectonic and volcanic reactions set the earth trembling and lava flowing, while dust and ash flung into the atmosphere instantly began lowering the temperature, turning to ice and snow what was once a tropical planet. Those few humans that did manage to survive fled from the storms and the snow, settling around two relatively untouched and protected areas, Basra Weyr on the western continent and the newly founded Isamyn Area on the northwestern tip of the Southern continent, which soon built up its own Weyr. Others took to simply living in ships, both large and small, and roamed between the two Weyrs, trading for goods and hunting the seas for what they needed to survive.
Now, twenty turns later, very little has changed for the better, and most for the worst... Ice encapsulates most of the world except in high summer, and the seas have risen dramatically, both which leave good land hard to find and in high demand... Also, two sub-species of whers have been discovered, having been swept to a remote Island during the Floods. Capable of enduring extreme cold temperatures much better than whers or dragons, they have become semi to almost completely aquatic (ice-wher versus sea-wher.). Incapable of being bonded, they feast on anything they can find, including the Great Ships, meaning dragons are often called upon to protect these ships in their crossing between the two continents, a dangerous task indeed.
Humanity and the dragons that bond to them both hover on the brink of extinction... Where will you stand in the fight on this new, Wilder Pern?
