Z'nil sighed for what must have been the seventh time in a few minutes. Beside him, the little green form of his week old green watched him anxiously, her eyes whirling sadly. Z'nil dropped a hand onto her head to rub idly in assurance. It wasn't her fault that things had turned out this way.. well it was.. but there was nothing they could do about it now. Anuth crooned sadly again. Didn't Hers lover her? Was she not good enough? Oh woe was she! Z'nil sighed again and looked down at her sadly, reassuring her that he loved her. Crooning again, though this time happier, she nuzzled into his side as he went back to the task at hand.
He looked down at the blank parchment in front of him. It was the very reason he was sitting in the Weyrling common room today instead of spending some time outside. He had to write the letter... he had put it off for a week now.. since the day his life had been destroyed, the day Anuth had found him and turned his world upside down. He grimaced as pangs of depression hit him from the green again and realized he hadn't been hiding the thoughts from her.
"Hush now little one, I'm just stressed. Don't you worry, you are precious to me." He mumbled quietly to her, stroking her eye ridges once more to placate her. As she settled, he allowed his mind to wander once more, though this time he made sure his little dragonet would not hear it. The letter... the letter that he needed to send off to his wife and daughter at Apollo. The letter that would tell his beloved ones that he wouldn't be coming home. A tear dripped down his cheek as an image of his young, crying daughter came to mind. Placing his head in his hands, he tried to quell his own sadness.
