Kordelia@Swamplights is much more likely to be up to date.
Name Kordelia
Pronunciation kohr dee lee ah
Age 16
Season Born in Summer
Gender Female
Sexuality Pansexual
Appearance
At about 5'8", Kordelia is about average-tall for most girls her age. She's reached her full height and will not grow anymore, most likely. Her skin is fairly pale, with a tendency to burn rather then tan- for this reason, she tends to prefer shade, as she has a habit of picking peeling skin obsessively. Kordelia's face is round, but for her pointed chin. She has gray-blue eyes, a thin nose, and the expression naturally held on her face is sharp and attentive. Her hair is something of great pride to her, and if there's something Kord spends the most time on, it's her hair. It's glossy, black, and naturally strait, though Kordelia spends a good ammount of time curling it so that it falls in ringlets. She wakes up earlier then she needs to and likewise takes other cuts to her own personal time to take care of her hair.
Where Kordelia's vanity shows is her presentation of herself. Whenever she can help it, she is impeccably clean. She dislikes even so much as excess wrinkling in her clothing. She wears fine clothing when she can manage, preferring skirts and things with lace. Even her work pants will have things like lace hems, and she'll wear those only because she has to. She's fond of medium or dark shades of color, paired with black.
Personality
Kordelia is tempestuous, like a storm in the middle of the sea.
Though she projects a cool surface facade, she has this energy to her, shifting and broiling under the surface. No matter what she tries, it's obvious: perhaps some seething quality in her expression, or the tension with which she holds herself. Whatever the cause, it brings to her a sort of severe energy, a proof of her passion. She is a very, very passionate individual, who brings the full force of her emotions-- and there is a LOT of force behind her multitudes of emotions-- to bear against whatever it is that she is doing.
The storm is the sublayer, though: her surface is cool, dignified. That was the training she received from her family: she was born to Pern's version of aristocrats, despite the fact that she never Really counted as one of them, and the training they instilled has lingered. She has this sort of trained dignity to her, and the kind of grace to her movements that one learns by balancing books on their head while they walk. Posture is automatic. She knows when to be polite, and how to be polite-- and thus is perfectly capable of not being polite when she chooses.
As part of that training, she learned the art of subtly. It came somewhat naturally to her, but the aristocracy just managed to give it teeth. She knows several ways to insult you while simultaneously looking like the most polite, sweetest angel you could imagine-- and she'll use it, too. The result of these attitudes is that she can seem, rightly, very haughty at times. As this is something that she tends to slip into without noticing, the result is that she frequently seems her haughtiest when she's not quite paying attention to what she's doing.
Kordelia is a very strong person, and perhaps the aristocracy did her a favor-- and the rest of the world a disservice-- by teaching her how to operate in a highly-charged political world. Her strength has always been a source of power and resiliance, an energy to get through challenges, and now she additionally knows how to use it to navigate the subtle currents of manipulation.
The cool facade she hides behind is actually a defense mechanism- she likes to pretend she doesn't care, and that she's so far removed from the world it won't matter what happens.. but it's not the case. She cares. She cares a lot, that's the problem, and that's why she has the internal tempest raging all the time.
Kordelia can be vengeful and occasionally petty. Frequently this manifests as passive-aggressive attacks-- after all, it wouldn't do to come all out and be frank about your hatred/dislike/vengeance/insert-negative-emotion-here. However, when pushed hard enough, she can occasionally be motivated to actual violence- but rarely will it ever be directed at a person or something else alive. Even if the person who has poked her enough to get her that angry (which is surprisingly hard to do), is right there in the room with her, saying 'hit me', what she's going to do is probably hit a wall, or break something ceramic, or throw things across the room. Afterwards , she'll feel horrible, for letting herself show such a vibrant show of emotion. Her favorite weapon is words, sharp words, and those she has absolutely no issue throwing at people, if she feels they deserve it. She can be freaking vicious if she chooses to be.
Rather cynical, Kordelia takes everything with a grain or salt-- or perhaps a few grains. Her entire world is a salt-frosted martini glass. She expects the worst, being a full-time pessimist. Her cynicism frequently manifests in her biting wit, and comments that reflect her internal bitterness.
Kord can be very judgmental, and while any trait can be both a benefit and a flaw, this one is not nearly so flaw-like as one might expect. Oh, it certainly can be: it can cause her to make false assumptions about people and be a dick to them- but she actually has a very good sense for people. She can tell who the shallow wherrybrains are.. and she can tell who the good-hearted, warm, sincere people are. She is prone to treating people according to her judgement of them.
That said, she's willing to give you a chance. She's willing to give almost anyone a chance. If at first glance, she thinks you're a wherry-headed idiot, then she's probably going to treat you a bit like one.. but she'll also give you the chance to prove her wrong, and keep herself toned down until you prove yourself to be a wherry-headed idiot. Then, of course, she'll still be polite.. but in that I'm-insulting-you-subtly sort of way.
Kordelia is a very emotional person, and it informs everything she does. Most of her decisions are based primarily in her emotions and how she's feeling. She can't help it: that's who she is. However, she is not entirely irrational: even though her decisions are 90% based in emotions, she does /try/ to logic things through prior to leaping headfirst into whatever she's doing. She doesn't always succeed, but she does manage to make sure she knows what she's doing and wants to deal with the consequences about 90% of the time, even if she does things that aren't what could logically be called 'a good idea'.
Kordelia is quite smart, but most of her shine comes in wisdom, not booksmarts. In terms of book-learning, she's about average, or slightly below average. Practical knowledge, however, is something she's really quite good at- especially practical knowledge about people and such. She also typically gets a good sense of situations, in a similar way to what she does with people.
Kordelia has a great grasp of politics. She knows the rules of the game-- insomuch as the game has rules at all, which is debatable. She can pick out the intricacies of a social situation and pick out people's moves as if she were watching a chess game. She is most familiar with hold politics, but as she spends more time in the weyr, she is getting an eye for it's politics too.
Kordelia would make a decent leader: she has the skills to command people and the sense to do it well. However, the thing that would give her the most problems in a position of power would be rallying a support base: though she recognizes the need for it, she probably wouldn't think to apply it to herself, which would harm her. She would likewise forget to take a more diplomatic face, and thus some of her harsher judgement would ruffle feathers amongst her underlings. She would probably be one of those capable leaders people don't really like to work under.
She constantly debates about trying to take power for herself. She knows the game, and frequently she thinks herself good enough that she could insert herself into it... but she also knows the consequences, and she doesn't want to shoulder those. This is an ongoing internal argument, that will probably continue to flipflop around inside her mind well into old age, no matter what she actually does with her life.
Kordelia is Fair, which is a fairly neutral boon. On one hand, she can be counted on to make fair decisions and award things fairly no matter her own feelings on the subject or the people involved-- she actually is capable of removing herself from situations that far. However, true fairness can be harsh, and doesn't often make friends. This is one instance where she is NOT subtle: she'll make calls how she sees them, so if you ask for her opinion, make sure you're willing to handle a potentially sharp edge. Note- while she can be objective regarding situations with OTHER people, she's not quite so skilled in removing herself from things, and thus will usually have a bias in anything she has stake in.
Kord hates crowds: they make her nervous and make her feel like she can't breathe. She is also slightly claustrophobic, but it only hits at odd intervals or when she's in a room small enough that she cannot extend her arms. Such situations will cause her to get frantic and try to remove herself from the small space- if she can't, she'll probably be reduced to a full-on panic attack. She does always have a preference for wide open spaces, and the few times she's ridden on a dragon prior to her candidacy have been some of the best times of her life.
However, Kordelia is usually willing to face her fears. She is though in a subtle way: she tossed herself at the weyr and into candidacy with only enough thought to be sure of the decision. She'll go quite far out of her comfort zone, and further depending on the direness of the situation.
Despite her internal tempest, she is actually a gentle person: it's for that reason that she tries not to hurt other living things. She's not internally violent, and what she seeks is peace- though she may never find it, and she knows that.
In certain situations, she can be forward, no matter what her dignified outward appearance would have you believe. This is mostly when she wants something and all other avenues have failed: she'll eventually just come out and ask for/demand it.
Most of all, Kordelia is independent. She is her own person, and she wants people to know that. Her ultimate loyalty is to herself, thank you very much. This frequently manifests itself in a rebelliousness, especially against specific authority figures who rub her the wrong way.
Family (if any) ----
Location Trelis Weyr
Rank Candidate
History Kordelia is the illegitimate daughter of an affluent but relatively minor noble-esque holder at Apolla Hold. From there she got a lot of the higher-society upbringing that colors many of her interactions, but it came with limitations too. Her childhood was fairly normal, but marked with the constant reality that she was an Outsider, only partially part of the family. Her father's wife resented her, as did many of the legitimate children.
In her early childhood, she didn't really care. However, as she grew into a teenager, this lack of belonging sparked an animosity with her family, which grew into a rebellious streak and a strong sense of independence. She didn't belong, and that bothered her. It was as a teenager that she learned she would have no part in the family inheritance, no gifts as her brothers and sisters would receive for coming of age.
That was the final straw, really. On her fifteenth birthday, she announced to her family that she was leaving, going to live at the weyr and be a candidate. They were shocked and appalled-- not because they had anything against the dragonriders, but because it wasn't their way to go off and do things as rashly as they thought she had made the decision. Similarly, it was one thing to support the dragonriders... it was another to have your daughter join their ranks, even if she was illegitimate. She ignored their meek protests and left at once, taking her stuff with her.
She hasn't looked back, much. She's stood at the hatchings since, and failed to Impress, but she hasn't been put off. Anyway, the whole point of leaving wasn't actually to go and impress a dragon--- though that would be nice-- it was to annoy her family and seek her own way in life. If there wasn't a dragon in her future, there would be something else. She could handle that.
