The steady sloshing of the waves against the worn pier was almost tranquil enough to lull the lad lounging on a heap of drying fish nets into a light doze. It was only when an unruly and uncharacteristically loud firelizard swooped overhead with a hearty bellow that the ruffled looking young man snapped back to the present. Shielding his eyes against the glare of the sun he looked up and glared at the circling blue, clearly annoyed as his moment of relaxation was disturbed. ”You know one of these days I’ll get the upper hand and sneak up on you! Bloody creature…” Grumbling to himself, Ryaxth watched the little creatures antics for a few moments longer before pushing himself to his feet and wandering down the sun bleached dock to where a ship was pulling in with it’s daily catch.
”Afternoon Cap’n. Sea treat you well today?” Ry inquired lazily as he grabbed a line and proceeded to secure the ship to the dock. He wasn’t particularly interested in whatever the answer was, which was clear as he made no further comment as the captain began to spill the days tale, but from working with the old sea dog a few years the lad learned that a little general, polite conversation tended to yield little perks to his salary every now and again. So with a casual smile toying with his features, Ry helped the captains men get the days catch onto shore and from there proceeded to sort the variety of fish for their different destinations. The Hold and Weyr would get most of the days total catch while the smaller market stalls and individual homeowners would come and buy their necessities. It was backbreaking work and more often than not he came home at night reeking of fish and decorated with their innards, much to his dislike, but it was work and he was glad for it. The marks he made helped him pay the family that had so graciously opened their home to him nearly two years ago when he had left his home in Benden for a new life.
Before he knew it the blazing morning sun was beginning hit the midday mark and the time had come for him to make the trek up to the Weyr with the days bountiful catch. With his cart laden down with goods, Ry made his way along the winding road till he entered the main gates of Trelis Weyr. It never failed to amaze him at the immense size of the place or the bustle of everyone inside. It almost reminded him of his few visits to Benden Weyr and he scowled at the thought. Nothing ever good came from that place. True his life had been spared twice by the massive bronze beasts that had called the Weyr home, but the memory of his brother’s death still haunted him and left a bitter tang in his mouth. So shaking his tormented past from his current train of thought, Ryaxth trudged his way through the Weyr, across the dining hall, and into the massive kitchen. ”Evenin’ everyone. Big haul today, you all should be eating well.” Mumbling his customary greeting to the kitchen staff, Ry deposited his cargo in the designated location before turning to leave. Only before he wandered out the lad found himself coming to a stop in the doorway and leaning against the sturdy frame as he looked into the proceedings of the dining hall. Clearly something of great importance had occurred in the Weyr. What though he couldn’t tell. But he remained in the doorway for a good long while, bi-colored gaze flicking from where firelizards curled upon their partners necks to where the Weyrleaders sat at the center of a long table. Surely something grand had to have occurred for everyone to look so cheerful?
