DragonSea
Perhaps it was partly because of the fact that the Pernese people managed to push the Red Star off course or perhaps it was the result of Global Warming, whatever the reason the oceans on Pern rose, engulfing the land. The rising waters wiped out much of the Pernese population, and caused the remaining population to scramble for survival. The little land, a few of the highest mountain peaks, that wasn't covered by water were too small to hold the remaining Pernese population. Pernese ingenuity sparked several ideas. The first idea that came to them, was to create a floating hold. The sea would provide their food, and it would allow for expansion. It seemed like a viable idea, but little did they realize, it was only a temporary solution. Eventually someone thought up a crazy idea: Land was scarce but water was plenty, why not move below the surface. Most people ignored that idea, but eventually, after several mishaps (several losses to the marine tunnel snakes and even more to floats breaking free or overturning) with the floating hold idea, some people began to consider it more seriously. Eventually a prototype shielding/pump system was developed, and tested on one of the underwater caverns. The system pumped the water out of the cavern, and it managed to hold the water back, keeping the cavern dry. That success drove them on, tinkering with it and expanding it until it became Ocean Weyrhold. Most of the population moved under the surface, although a few hardy souls remained surface bound providing vegetation from those few specks of land.
Latent in some of the population were Eridani genetic alterations from well before the Pern colony was even founded, well the conditions on Pern were enough to cause the next generation of these people to mutate enough that they could survive outside the protective shield, and encouraged by this, some healers took samples and attempted to find a way to introduce these beneficial traits into the rest of the population. They were met with mixed success however the weyrhealer took the results of this and adjusted it for the dragons, and injected it into a gold egg. Warming on the seabed, the first clutch from that golden hatchling waits heralding a new age of Pern.
