It was sunny, clear, and hot outside almost to the point of being unpleasant, and a restday besides. As far as Hirion was concerned, that made the day perfect for one thing: a nice long swim in the nearby bay. Ferrth, never one to pass up the chance to play, naturally agreed with her, and rider and dragon set off for Crescent Bay as soon as their responsibilities for the day were over.
Hirion was a strong swimmer and a decent diver, having grown up so near the ocean, but it was something she still enjoyed from time to time since becoming a rider. In fact, ever since she and Ferrth had started flying together, she had toyed with the idea of diving from dragonback. On the one hand, there was the danger of falling too fast and the threat of what the Weyrlingmaster would do to them upon finding out. On the other hand, it would be so fun...
Yep, sounds like fun to me! Ferrth exclaimed. He sounded as though he would have liked to try it himself, had he not been a thirty-foot-long dragon who could fly. Should we try it, Hirion? The blue asked eagerly.
It was tempting...Hirion grinned, with little more than a cursory glance around them to make sure nobody important was watching. Alright then, Ferrth, let's do this, she told him from atop the blue's back. Fly in low to start with, though, about a dragonlength.
Ferrth rumbled in agreement, but it took a few tries before the blue was gliding slow enough and close enough to the water's surface (about twenty feet below them at this point), before Hirion felt steady enough to leap off of Ferrth's neck and into the water in a dive.
She bit back a scream of equal parts fear and excitement as she fell and landed in the deeper water a fair way from the shore, spitting out salt water as she surfaced. Ferrth, meanwhile, had landed on the beach, and as soon as his wings were tucked in, came splashing into the waves to meet her.
