The hatching had been certainly full of surprises, and considering its events and those that occurred after, Inali had decided it was best to hold off the feast until the night after. People needed time to grieve...she needed time to grieve. The Weyrwoman had went to greet their newcomer after the Goldrider had arrived, but just as quickly she had come back to see Azeals body. The boy had been almost like family to her, and yet she had spent so little time with the son of her childhood friend.
The young woman shook her head, desperate to clear her thoughts. This was a hatching feast, a time of celebration! It is also a time to say goodbye to the two we have lost My Lady. Nodding her head, Inali sighed and rubbed her temple. Once again the weyrfolk had done an amazing job at converting the Dining Hall into a beautiful placed filled with red and gold, Trelis' colors.
Leotie was in a corner with the band, and for a moment the eight turn old girl looked so much like her mother, that Inali had to fight back tears from that as well. Chin up LiliMine. You must be strong for them now. Nodding, Inali straigtened her shoulders and started to greet the weyrfolk and riders as they came in. A table had been set aside for the Weyrlings in the place of the traditional Weyrleader's table, something she had insisted on. It should be tradition to aknowledge the newest fighting force more than the leaders on their birthdate.
Walking up to where she had placed her own food and a goblet of imported Benden Red, Inali waited for eyes to be on her, and when they were not a bugle from Loraketh was all that was needed. "Greetings my riders, my handlers, my friends. Tonight we celebrate the latest weyrlings to be paired, and we come together to reminisce about a young boy that has died on the sands. A moment of silence for those we have lost please, not just last night, but in the storm as well for I realize we have not yet done that."
Here she bowed her head, and in a few moments she raised it again. "As is tradition when someone passes, I ask who stands for the fallen riders..who takes up their mantle and their family to care for them?" She went through the list of lost weyrfolk, pausing between each for someone living to take a stand and claim tribute to that person and their family. From that point on it would be their duty to watch over their family in the lost one's place. It was a tradition in all Weyrs, one from long, long ago.
Inali sighed, pausing for a moment. There was one last name..."I call for Kierah, the lost WeyrHarper of Trelis Weyr." She looked around, wondering who would stand up first for the dead woman, and she snapped her head up as a small voice rang out. "I, Leotie stand for Kierah." The girl was shaking slightly, and she raised her head high as she took a step forward. Inali nodded her head, blinking to keep away the tears.
After all was said and done, Inali waited for silence again. "We greet a new Sub-Queen as well as a new King and many others to our Weyr this night. You will do well I am sure, Nightsingers! However, there is another that we must greet. Ssawla of Gold Kizzinth has come at my call to help lead the Weyr until Iirla and Izanycorth have graduated. This will ensure more clutches as well in the turns leading up to the new Pass. Welcome them to our home, their new home." Stepping down, Inali motioned for the new Goldrider to rise and show herself. The Weyrwoman nodded toward her, and glanced in the young girl's direction that had impressed the female blue as well.
Don't you dare say that there is something wrong with my children...even Odilyth has her uses I am sure. I wasn't about to love. I just think we should keep an eye on them all.
Loraketh couldn't disagree with that.
(ooc: The ritual talked about in the post is one spoken of in Dragongirl *just finished reading that part actually*. When a rider or weyrfolk falls, someone is expected to take up their place claiming the deeds they have committed and helping to care for their family. It's considered a great honor to do this. Those of you with characters that have died in The Great Storm may have your characters step forward, or have someone else do it.)
