"Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry, you don't know how lovely you are. I had to find you, tell you I need you... Tell me your secrets, and ask me your questions... Nobody said it was easy. Its such a shame for us to part. Nobody said it was easy. No one ever said it would be this hard. Oh take me back to the start."
Name: Zane.
Age: 17 turns.
Season Born in: Winter.
Gender: Female.
Sexuality: Homosexual (closeted.)
Appearance: The young girl’s long hair is full of body and wave, which is envied by some. The dark chocolate brown colour of her hair she considers to be nothing special, though she has a ton of natural red highlights throughout. Her eyes are a rich brown, and they take on an almond-shape. She isn’t all that tall, which she’s not very happy about. She stands at an average 5’5”. Both she and her foster parents were fairly sure she wouldn’t grow much more. She’s a very thin girl, almost to the point of looking somewhat unhealthy; especially when matched with her pallid skin. Put her outdoors as often as she was at Big Bay Hold-added with the heat-and she’ll retain a nice tan.
Fancy clothes aren’t this girls style, which is fine and dandy seeing as Candidate’s simply wear their tunics about the Weyr. Though she bears a small chest, which makes clothing hang off of her, she could care a less. She’s the complete opposite of girly. Truthfully, she would never be able to fix herself up nice without some help. She has a kitten-like expression on her face most times, which is a gentle smile that you'd swear reaches straight up to her eyes. Despite her coming of age, and being pronounced a young woman, she can’t seem to get rid of her childish appearance. Nobody ever guesses her to be seventeen, most guess at fourteen and down.
Personality: Zane is the exact kind-of person you’d want to run into when you’re in some kind-of trouble. She’s overly helpful, to the point of being an annoyance. She accomplishes a task to the full extent of what she’s been asked, and then some. When it comes to people, she’s a nervous wreck, though she does a good job of concealing just about all of her emotions. A lot of the time she’s socially awkward, mainly because she hasn’t experienced a whole lot; as a result Zane usually keeps to herself. She’s great at acting, or more like fooling people.
When she does socialize her kindness can be a bit overbearing for she apologizes far more than she ought to, and mainly for things she didn’t even do. The thought of upsetting someone is one of her greatest social concerns. She’s a bit too sensitive, and tends to over analyze far too much. She had no close friends back home and her foster parents were more than a little concerned about her. The majority of her time was spent with her nose buried in some reading material, or exploring the Hold inside and out. She has a high-level of curiosity and usually won’t stop searching until she finds the answer she’s searching for. She’s the Fort Knox of secrets. Zane’s learned the hard way that you can’t give your trust out so easily. She’s slowly learning not to care about what other people think of her... slowly.
She’s got a wild imagination, and uses it to her amusement. Zane’s perfect day out is spending time on a beach, enjoying the waves and the sun, or chilling out on a tree branch thinking about her past, and possible future. She does her best to be optimistic-though it usually runs out in regards to social events-and not let her past take hold of her future. A lot of the time she finds herself believing that she won’t amount to much, but that’s just your typical teenager, too afraid to dream big.
Zane is nothing if not unsure about herself. It’s as if the girl is always waiting for someone to make decisions for her. Most of her life was spent under the rule of her foster parents, and rarely did she argue against anything they said. Even when she didn’t feel like doing something, she did it, never creating a dispute, even then. Her timidity, and too her shyness, are the near death of her. People often use the poor girl, promising friendship and care in return. When said friendship and care proves to be false, Zane continues to do their bidding, thinking that in the end it’ll all come full circle.
This naive girl is sadly the most loyal friend that a person could wish to have. She’ll be right by her friends ‘till death do them part, and is often frequently giving of herself. Whether it just is her time, or her energy, she offers it up willingly. She can never seem to give up a friendship either, even if the other person has already let go of her. She has major issues with change, and just cannot process it. She doesn’t understand how a person’s feelings can be so secure one moment, and then all over the place the next. She is devoted, to a fault, and this is also her greatest downfall.
It can be said that Zane becomes obsessive with other people, which is most peculiar. She cannot stand the touch of another human being, no matter whom, unless she has this certain feel for them... Some would describe it as a crush, or even admiration. And until she finds one whom she has this indescribable feeling for, she will let no one enter her personal space. A mystery to most, due to her many quirks, Zane loses friends quite easily. All she wants is somebody who cares...
Her main goal in life is to save someone, and no one really understands what she means by that. Most picture a heroic event of literally saving someone from harm, but in Zane’s mind it’s more like: charging-up someone’s self-confidence and helping them to be the person they truly want to be, even if she can’t do so for herself. A silent sufferer, Zane keeps most things bottled-up and to her. She doesn’t even have it in her to jump to her own defence most of the time, whether it be an accusation over something being stolen, or simply someone picking on her due to her vulnerability.
It’s incredibly rare that anyone sees the girl get fired-up. When being picked at, made fun of, or even during a fight, her primary emotion is sadness. Sometimes she steps up to the plate before she’s ready, and winds up backing down a lot of the time. She grew-up having no expectations, feeling that the under dog-herself-only leads life getting fed the occasional bone here and there. She doesn’t expect a lot from others, which is relatively sad. She’s oh so well behaved and doesn’t dare to question authority.
Now, despite all of this, it has not been unknown for someone to fuss over the teen. She's been called cute, especially when she begins to blush (something that isn't hard to make her do,) or even when she stutters and stammers over things she's too embarrassed to talk about. She’s often very perceptive of the advances of others, but she turns them down, not all that sure why. (Said advances being from the male gender, of course...) When she sees a girl wandering by, her eye is usually on them, if they’re pretty or cute. She isn’t often caught eyeing women, which she’s thankful for, because she’s afraid of the meaning behind her harmless glances. She just wants to be normal, even though she doesn’t know what normal really is.
The things she does on a day to day basis she questions whether or not is really her. She’s paranoid of acting more like someone else, to be seen a certain way, rather than simply being herself. One soon recognizes her nervous actions. Her incessant fiddling, shifty-eyes, and lip biting, are only a few.
Family (if any):
Foster father - Leren
Foster mother - Elena
Location: From Big Bay Hold, to Trelis Weyr.
Rank: Dragon Candidate.
History: No matter how gorgeous Big Bay Hold was-in the Northern Continent of Pern-Zane wanted nothing more than to be far away from the place. Once birthed, she was taken from her biological mother, her father waiting for her mother’s presence amongst the Holdless. Both he and his wife had been stealing from the Hold, and therefore been banished to a smaller and less inhabited place (though in the days to come Zane couldn't believe that there was any Hold smaller than Big Bay Hold.) So, once birthed, her mother left Zane behind in the capable hands of the Healer’s. They quickly found a foster family amongst the beach dwellers, and she was raised with zero knowledge of her biological parents. Every time she asked about them, she was only told that they were good people. She too had almost been banished as a child, along with her parents, but the argument of her only being a child won-over, and the Lord came to change his mind.
A fine opportunity was presented to the girl due to the prominent fishercraft that many people thrived on there. The fishermen worked hard, but were a fairly easygoing lot. She was offered the title of apprentice fishermen, and wished to take it, for what better opportunity would come along? None, from her viewpoint. Though, her apprenticeship was denied when it was learned that she was deathly afraid of entering the water. The girl’s phobia of drowning, after a few attempts of helping her to overcome it, was dubbed a lost cause. So, instead, she’d sit on the shores of the beach, enjoying the beauty of the water from afar, but rarely ever stepping in ocean water above her ankles.
Zane enjoys the scorching heat of Rukbat, used to it. She cannot stand even an ounce of cold, ridiculously having a blanket wrapped around her in-doors. Her foster parents soon came to see that their daughter was more than bit strange. She went through many stages that they worked hard to help her overcome, most to no avail. They felt as if they were failing her as parents, but really, she was just... Zane. She spent most of her days alone doing chores, or going off to explore; though the beach ran on for miles, so really she never got very far. She’s known loneliness for quite some time, and pretends to be okay with it, when really it eats away at her, as it would anyone. The love of her parents sustained her.
It wasn’t until one windy day, when a storm struck Big Bay Hold that a dragonrider pair landed on the beach. All of the families were inside their homes, knowing how violent the sea became during the Spring and Summer months. Zane was sitting in the kitchen watching her foster mother cook, a blanket wrapped around her fragile form. Her foster father was outdoors, as usual, disregarding the weather. This was how he came to spot the dragonrider, and converse with the greenrider.
The greenrider was invited into their home to seek shelter from the torrential downpour. He accepted, thankful, and was keeping a close eye on the couple’s daughter. She was quiet, and hardly spoke; leaving at one point to go into her own confined room. He questioned her behaviour privately, near coming to the conclusion that she was being abused. Of course, with the friendliness and hospitality shown him by bother of her parents, he could not bring himself to think badly of either of them. This led him to put the blame on a relative. He came to ask questions about the girl, unable to hide his rising curiosity after a time. They answered all of his questions, not seeming at all offended. And when he was done, he simply nodded. He went silent for a moment, confusing all in the room. He then adopted a look of surprise and confusion both. The man was speaking to his green, which Zane's parents knew not. He quickly apologized, and then declared that if they and the girl decided it’d be best for her, than he would like to take her back to Trelis Weyr.
At first they were stunned, wondering why their daughter-of all girls-would be selected for such a privilege. They were not stupid people; they could see that she was a bit... off. In other words, she did not act like a normal child, though it had nothing to do with her mental capabilities. The opinions of the Healer’s had already been given, and all declared it a negative, she was fully capable—looking at her from just a mental capacity alone.
Zane was brought out of her room to speak to the greenrider, and at first it looked like she might cry at the idea alone. To try and ease her mind, he spoke-of why most called Trelis Weyr home. The size of the Weyr was not at all daunting, there were many friendly and helpful people, and most of all their clutches were like nothing any person on Pern had really ever witnessed before. The colors were becoming more common, yes, but the world of Pern was being hit with even more surprises as time went on. While it sounded exciting to her, it sounded far more like someone else’s life rather than her home.
In the end she wound up going back into her room to discuss it further with both of her parents, while the greenrider waited in the other room. They both wanted her to go, very badly, and that was the ultimate reason that she wound-up agreeing. So, now on her way to Trelis Weyr-as a Candidate-she wonders how she’s going to manage!
