Blanca sighed as she walked through the shadows of the Weyrbowl. It felt like it had been forever since she had first entered the Weyr. It still didn’t feel like a home, but then again, she wasn’t sure if she wanted it to either. Shadow mewled softly from where he walked beside her, and Cin lightly crooned from his own perch on her left shoulder. As always, Nel was silent, but she sent feelings of love, and encouragement. They would find a home for the four of them eventually, they just had to, and they couldn’t give up until they did.
Blanca stopped and knelt down, she was on the side farthest from the hatching sands, and was thankful that the day was overcast. She was hidden quite well despite her silvery white hair. She gently stroked her feline’s black fur, and smiled softly at him. He had been her friend, her family, for five turns now. The two of them had gone through so much together, and he had been such a great comfort to her every night after He had beaten her. She could always count on Shadow to be there for her, he was her protector, and kind of like the big brother of the family.
Blanca then turned her attention to the brown firelizard that was now sitting on the dirt next to the black feline. She had found Cin just one turn after she had found Shadow, and had gone through just about as much with him as she had the feline. She gently stroked his back, and marveled at how calm he was, even in such a strange place. He crooned at her, and she knew he would always be there, the steady force that always kept the family together, always kept them going, even when all they wanted to do was give up. He seemed like the father of the family to her.
Then there was Nel, the little green firelizard had her extra-long tail curled around Blanca’s neck, but she never held on too tightly that it hurt her. She really was the baby of their family; after all she was only two turns old. She had been found not too long before the great Strom had hit Solace, and the young girl was glad for the green’s constant company. She reached up to where Nel was perched on her right shoulder, and gently stroked the green’s small head. If it hadn’t been for the three of them, she wasn’t sure if she would even be here now.
Blanca knew that if she lost any one of them, her world would end, and so would she. She couldn’t live without them, they had gone through so much, and each one of them needed each other. They needed each other’s comfort, and love, and without that, they wouldn’t be a family now would they? Some would say that she has an unnatural relationship with her pets, but to her these weren’t pets, they were her family. The only family she has ever known, and she wouldn’t change any of it for anything or anyone, and she would never let anyone change her mind.
