Rayas sighed and hung his head as he walked along the sandy beach. He knew he should be in the Weyr with his father, but he couldn't bring himself to join them all. He knew he should be happy for his father, but he couldn't help but feeling a little bad about how things had gone down between the Southern and Trelis riders. Alright that's enough! He shook his head and plopped himself down on the sand. He sighed heavily, and wondered if he should go back. Rayas knew there wasn't much he could do now, but maybe he could go back, and meet some of the other candidates. Maybe they won't completely hate me. He wasn't sure if the candidates from Trelis would judge him because of who his father was or not, but he also wasn't sure if he wanted to find out. Looked up at the sky, and the few clouds that lazily floated across it. He wished he had wings so he could fly up there and touch the fluffy white things.

Ar’rex was very much aware of the fact that his son was currently residing in Trelis. After all it had been him who had approved the request for the boys transfer as soon as it had come in. Even if he didn’t know the boy that well there was going to be a clutch on the Sands soon so why not give the boy the chance to become a rider like himself? He did want to be a rider, right?
The man frowned at the thought before finishing off his mug of lukewarm klah. Ar’rex pulled a face at the flavor of the cooled beverage and made a mental note to order a fresh pot as soon as possible. Perhaps you should speak with him yourself instead of jumping to conclusions, Ar’rexMine. I saw him head for the beach. The brownrider pondered this for a moment while staring longingly at his empty cup. Oh the choices a man must make. Grumbling under his breath as he reached a decision, Ar’rex pushed himself from the chair he had been occupying and jogged out to the ledge to hop on to Sithorath’s neck for the short glide to the shore.
They made it there in no time and the boy was fairly easy to pick out considering he was the only one wandering by the waters edge. Sliding to the ground, Rex shot a look to the blind brown who grumbled something about ‘walking’ before the pair made their way over to Rayas. “I see you made it over here in one piece then. Have you had the chance to get settled in and everything yet?” Sithorath rumbled a low greeting to His’ offspring as he gaze the boy a once over. He was already a candidate but it didn’t hurt to look around a little.

Rayas turned his head and quickly looked around when he heard wing beats. He took a deep breath and stood up as the dragon he recognized as his father's brown Sithorath. He saluted his father, as he had been taught was the proper thing to do when greeting a high ranking rider. He wasn't sure if it mattered if he was the man's son or not, so he made sure to air on the side of cautiousness. He nodded his head when his father spoke. Of course he had made it here in one piece.
Rayas was the Weyrleader's son. No one in their right mind would do any harm to him without knowing the consequences. Yes father, I've gotten settled in. Have you father? After respectfully answering his father, he turned his attention to the large brown that was the man's life partner. Greetings Sithorath. I hope you are doing well as well. He bowed his head respectfully to the large male, after all, he wasn't sure how to greet the Weyrleader's dragon.
Rayas was nervous, but was surprisingly good at keeping hidden. He showed no physical sign, and unless you could read his mind, you would think he was completely calm. He wished he could tell his father that all he wanted was some sort of friend. Someone he could talk to, or to hang out with whenever he had some free time. After all, his father had Sithorath, and it seemed like everyone else he met had some sort of pet, or life partner. All Rayas had were his things from home.

Ar’rex watched the boys mannerisms carefully. Not with a criticizing eye mind you, but more of a curious one. “Good, glad to hear it.” He nodded lightly and folded his arms across his chest. “Me? Oh well you know how new Weyrlea-no, actually I suppose you wouldn’t.” Rough wouldn’t be the exact term he’d use to describe settling in. Actually, he couldn’t think of a better word to describe how unstable his situation actually was. Ah, but why bother the boy with such matters?
“It’s a bumpy start but I’m certain everyone will be settled shortly.” Nice save. Ar’rex patted himself mentally on the back for that one. Bumpy? Is that what we’re calling it now? Sithorath inquired with almost a rumbling chuckle. It’s safe to say his question went unanswered.
Sithorath crooned at the greeting. I am well, LittleMine. His next words would only be heard by Rayas. Don’t worry too hard, young one. You’re never truly alone. Never much for words the blind male eyed the boy a moment longer before turning his attention in the direction of the Weyr Heights and the array of different hued dragons soaking up the pale spring sun.

Rayas watched his father closely, and wondered just how bad of a reception he had received when he had arrived. That I hope everything calms down soon so everyone can settle in peacefully. His pale green eyes seemed to sparkle as he thought about all the Southern riders trying to settle into life at Trelis. For some reason he couldn't see old J'degar settling in quietly. From what little bit he knew about the old man, he could guess and say that he wouldn't be happy with the way things were done in Trelis.
Rayas smiled respectfully to his father's brown when he was addressed. It is also good to hear you are well Sithorath. How do you like being the new Weyrleader? He didn't know what it was like to be in a position of so much power, and wondered how the blind dragon was handling it. He mentally jumped when the brown said he was never truly alone. What do you mean? He didn't understand how he could never be alone when he was alone almost every minute of every day.
Rayas was going to need a lot of training to even begin to understand how cryptic dragons could be. But enough of that for now. He could wonder about that later. So father, have you seen those new colored dragons that we have heard about? He had only been told that those new colors were just rumors, but his father would be able to tell him for certain if they were real or not. If they were real, he was going to have to take a look for himself. After all, he had heard that the new red ones could be quite mean.

The Weyrleader sighed inwardly and rubbed the back of his neck as the boy spouted off another question. Really Ar’rex knew just as much as his son, maybe a little more. However when it came to these new colors Trelis seemed to breed, that his Wingthird lovingly referred to as abominations, well he was just as stumped as the rest of his Southern companions. Patience Mine. The young one is simply curious. You were full of questions yourself at his age, remember? The dark haired man glanced up at his brown companion as the blind dragons voice broke into his thoughts.
“I’ve seen them, yes, and met with a few of the young Riders. I don’t know what to make of them yet, especially the little red and orange ones…” He trailed off and looked back to the Weyr as if almost expecting to see the odd group of colors staring back at him. Of course he saw nothing but it wouldn’t have surprised him if he did. After all they did seem to be a strong bonded and crafty little group. Though he supposed it’s natural they stuck together seeing how they were the only companions to these new and strange colors.
Looking at the Weyr seemed to remind him that it was close to klah time and the little twitch in the back of his mind was beginning to go nuts from the short withdraw from the deliciously warm liquid. Immediately he regretted leaving his mug back in his weyr as a small scowl darkened his blue eyes. Oh yes, according to him, this day had been ruined. “Curious about Standing I take it then? Any thoughts as to which color you think you’ll bond with?”

Rayas bit the inside of his lip when he saw his father rub the back of his neck. He figured he had asked one too many questions, and his father was getting agitated with him. He actually started wondering when he last had a cup of klah. He knew his father had a "thing" for the warm drink. Oh well, this father-son time was about ready to end anyways. He knew his father would be needed within the Weyr since he is the new Weyrleader, and had new responsibilities.
Rayas looked up at his father with a face radiating curiosity when the man spoke of the new colors. So, his father had met the new colors. This opened up the flood gaits, and made the young man want to ask his father more questions about them, but he kept his mouth shut. He would wait until the next time he saw his father within the Weyr. Either that or he would just have to seek out these new colors and see if they would be willing to answer some of his questions.
Rayas nodded a little at his father's question, and shook his head. I'm not sure father. I just hope something will choose me. It wasn't hard to hear the worry in his voice. He hung his head when he realized how pathetic he sounded. He hoped his father wouldn't notice it. He looked over at the large brown for a little support. After all, he was a candidate now, which meant someone had to have seen something in him. That had to count for something right?
