History Barrod grew up around wood. His family worked on wooden bowls and mugs after they ate their dinner. Projects were designed and left in the living spaces. There were tools on the walls. He remembers sanding and smoothing wood grain before he could read.
Such was the life of the son and grandson of crafters. Many of his friends were much the same. Fort Hold was the finest and oldest place on Pern, the finest crafters lived there. Everyone knew this, everyone tried to live up to their reputation. Barrod learned from good Harpers, and played with friends whose families were ranked by how many generations they'd had master crafters in their line. With all that, of course he also became a wood crafter. What else could he be?
He was pretty good at it too, but liked a clean spare line to his works and disliked ornamentation. At Fort, a lot of value was placed in clever ornamenting. The base had to be sound of course, but to leave it plain? Few others could see the beauty of the grain and using knots carefully.
On reaching Journeyman status Barrod looked for a place with lots of wood and a need for good sturdy furniture. When the chance at Trelis opened up he applied immediately. The masters were hesitant about sending him, he was within Candidate age and so many had been lost to the dragons. Barrod denied that was part of his reason, again showing what he liked to make and citing just how much wood there was to work with at Trelis.
Only because no one else wanted the job was he allowed to go and he left with detailed plans on teaching others how to make the normal bowls, mugs, platters and benches that were needed at the Weyr.
