Pern has been free from Thread for many turns. The population has expanded and many have moved away from the Holds living in villages and small towns. The Weyrs have been reduced to just two, Benden and Ista.
The Lord Holders voted many turns ago to decrease the amount of dragons needed on Pern, these days they are seen more as messengers and freight carriers, they don't hold the status they were once used to. Gone are the days when the Weyrs were regaled and provided for. Dragons are not really considered special these days. There are roughly 300 dragons left between the two Weyrs and each Weyr has a single Golden Queen.
Many people believe that Thread has gone for good and it will never return. The Harpers still teach the songs, but people don't really believe them, Pern is a changed place! The dragons are no longer important, being a dragonrider doesn't have the glamour it used to have. The Lord Holders rule Pern and they have become fat and greedy over the last thirty turns.
Maris Weyrhold was founded 28 turns ago in the heart of the Southern Continent. Maris, an old Gold rider, former Weyrwoman of Benden, stepped aside to let the younger folks take over. She had had enough of the scheming ways of the Lord Holders, and Maris, like many dragon riders, believed that thread would return. And when it did, Pern was going to be dreadfully unprepared.
Maris told the Weyrs and the Holds what she was doing and thirty-three riders and dragons from the two Weyrs joined her, along with 147 folks who were disillusioned with the Holds. They made the trek to the South, searching for a place to build their new home. Eventually they found a small lake with plenty of land for them to call their own. The land was protected by the fabled grubs and Maris and those who had followed her soon set up a new home. Maris's Gold Maith rose shortly after they found the Weyrhold. A clutch of ten eggs produced a Gold called Salzinith, 2 bronzes, 2 browns, 2 blues and 3 greens. Sadly Maris did not survive long enough to see the Weyrhold prosper. She was a victim of fire head, dying a few days after the clutch had hatched and impressed. The new Weyrwoman, a young woman called Silvy was faced with the task that Maris had started. The folk decided to call the Weyrhold after its founder. Maris Weyrhold became a place of hope.
In the North, things got worse as the Lord Holders got greedier. Dragons came in search of the fabled Maris Weyrhold. The Lord Holders had decreed that the Weyrs could no long search outside of the Weyr Area. Hatchlings were going between, and with an unknown illness was sweeping across the North, dragons were just seen a pest and the Holders suddenly turned on them. Then the Weyrs began to fall victim to the illness.
Silvy sent word to the Weyrs that they would welcome dragons, but only if they were fit and healthy, she couldnt risk the illness spreading to the Weyrhold. A smaller holding was set up from the Weyrhold, new arrivals were housed here for 4 sevendays. The illness was confined and treated by the Healers who had developed new methods over the turns of treating firehead and the Southern illnesses. The dragons began to survive.
When Salzinith rose she was caught by a bronze called Geth. She clutched 15 eggs, including a Gold egg. When they hatched three new colors emerged. A junior Crimson Queen; a fiery red with a temper to match. A bronze sized black who said he was an Obsidian and a smaller Quartz dragon, who shimmered like a rainbow. This one was a female, she even went on to clutch. That was 12 turns ago.
The Weyrhold is now flourishing, there have been no more new colors since those three, but some have seen flitters in new colors, maybe it is only a matter of time till the colors arrive in the dragons.
But also danger is returning. The red star has been seen in the skies. The dragons know what it means. Whether the Holders have heeded the return of the the old enemy remains to be seen. No news has come from the North in five turns. The Weyrholders look after themselves, Salzinith recently rose, caught once more by Geth, a clutch of 14 eggs sits nestled in the hatching sands. It is only a matter of time until thread falls, Maris Weyrhold is ready. But what will happen to the rest of Pern remains to be seen....
